Fat Freddy’s Drop

From local clubs in Wellington to major festivals and venues around the world, Fat Freddy’s Drop’s performances are among New Zealand’s most popular exports. The seven-piece band emerged from a group of like-minded musicians who organised jam sessions in the 1990s.

Sharing a passion for reggae, dub, funk and jazz, they released their first album, Live at the Matterhorn, in 2001. Their international breakthrough came when the single Midnight Marauders was picked up by the influential DJ group Jazzanova. Many years and tours later, Fat Freddy’s Drop is known as a musical powerhouse that continues to experiment, improvise and, above all, impress live! For their show at De Roma, they are now returning to the legendary Based On A True Story from 2005. The tour is also a tribute to Chris ‘MU’ Faiumu, co-founder of the band, who passed away in 2024. With this concert series, Fat Freddy’s Drop wants to keep alive the spirit and intention with which the album was made at the time.
